ELECTION WORKER INFORMATION

Election Worker Application

How do I qualify?

  • You must be registered to vote in Escambia County.
  • You must have the ability to read, write, speak the English language, and direct voters through the voting process.
  • You can’t be a candidate or have an immediate family member as a candidate on the ballot.
  • You’ll need transportation to the polling place and to training classes.
  • You must be able to lift at least 40 pounds, be physically flexible, and endure prolonged periods of standing and sitting.
  • You must be able to deal patiently and courteously with the public and with your co-workers.
  • It’s best if you’re a non-smoker; there is NO SMOKING in and around polling places on Election Day.
  • You must meet these requirements and fulfill all responsibilities of the particular poll-worker position you wish to fill.

What training do I need?

Florida Law requires that Election Workers attend a minimum of 2 hours of training before each election. More training may be required, based on your assigned position. Classes include “hands-on” training with the electronic voting equipment and information on serving voters with disabilities.

What are the general duties of Election Workers?

  • Work with other Election Workers to set up the polling place before opening at 7:00 a.m.
  • Deal patiently and courteously with the public and with your co-workers.
  • Perform assigned duties throughout the day.
  • Work with other Election Workers to pack up materials and voting machines after the last voter has voted and election results are transmitted from the precinct (Polls close at 7:00 p.m., but any qualified voter in line at that time is allowed to vote)

What are the different Election Worker positions?

Clerk

  • Responsible for the operation of the polling location on Election Day
  • Verify delivery of supplies prior to Election Day
  • Primary contact between Elections Office and Polling Location
  • Maintains all paperwork at the polling location
  • Returns voted ballots and other materials at the end of Election Day
  • Oversees and assigns duties to other pollworkers as needed
  • Clerk pay is $200.00 (election day, training & mileage)

EViD Supervisor

  • Assists the Clerk as needed through the day
  • Responsible for opening, closing and operation of the EViD
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures at the polling location
  • EViD supervisor pay is $170.00 (election day & training)

EViD Operator

  • Determines voter eligibility
  • Verifies voter identification and signature
  • Provides Ballot Issue Slips to voters
  • EViD operator pay is $130.00 (election day & training)

Ballot Issuer

  • Maintains and audits ballot supply
  • Distributes ballots to voters
  • Assists clerk in balancing vote totals with cast ballots
  • Ballot Issuer pay is $130.00 (Election Day & training)

Equipment Operator

  • Responsible for setting up/shutting down voting equipment
  • Troubleshoots voting equipment issues
  • Equipment Operator pay is $130.00 (Election Day & training)

Poll Deputy

  • Maintain order outside the polling place
  • Assist other workers in preparing polling place on Election Day
  • Posts signs and materials outside and near the entrance of polling location
  • Deputy pay is $120.00 (election day & training) 

What is an Election Worker’s schedule on Election Day?

  • Report to assigned precinct no later than 6:00 a.m. (or other designated time). Polls open at 7:00 a.m.
  • Polls close at 7:00 pm, however Election Workers must stay until polling location duties are complete
